The coronavirus, specifically known as SARS-CoV-2, is a novel virus identified in late 2019 in Wuhan, Hubei province, China, that causes a disease named COVID-19. It is part of a larger family of viruses known as coronaviruses, which have been responsible for various diseases in humans and animals.
This particular strain, SARS-CoV-2, has since spread globally, leading to a widespread pandemic. The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets and can manifest in symptoms ranging from mild coughs and fevers to severe respiratory distress.
The global spread of COVID-19 has prompted an unprecedented medical and societal response, including the rapid development and distribution of vaccines.
The UK employs various COVID-19 vaccines, all of which have undergone rigorous evaluations for safety, quality, and efficacy.
While the majority can receive any of the available vaccines, offering protection against multiple COVID-19 strains, individuals cannot select their preferred vaccine.
Certain groups, such as pregnant individuals, those under 18, those 75 and older, or in rare instances, individuals who’ve had a severe allergic reaction to a prevalent vaccine, might be limited to specific vaccine options or might be directed to specialist clinics for an alternative vaccine. Notably, children below 12 receive a reduced dosage compared to older children and adults.
The newly identified and highly mutated Covid variant, Pirola, has led to a surge in cases in the UK, prompting the government to advance the schedule for autumn vaccinations.
Known scientifically as BA.2.86, Pirola is the newest Omicron variant detected this summer. Its 34 additional mutations have raised concerns among specialists as it might possess an enhanced ability to bypass vaccine immunity.
This development coincides with the report of 100,516 new Covid cases in the UK as of September 10, as per The Zoe Health Study.
