Make sure you're fully protected before you travel!

You can catch rabies if bitten by an infected animal and not vaccinated. Travellers should take precautions, such as getting vaccinated, when visiting countries where rabies is common.

Even though 99% of rabies cases are from dog bites, other animals can carry the rabies virus and pass it on. Rabies is particularly dangerous because there is no cure and once symptoms develop, it is almost always fatal.

A couple of vaccinations could be the difference between staying healthy and enjoying your travels or getting ill.

The most effective treatment is vaccination prior to exposure, often in many countries’ vaccination will be given post exposure however HypeRab is the most effective treatment as it contains Immune globulin, (rabies antibodies).

HypeRab is rarely provided either due to inaccessibility or stock issues. Ideally post exposure should be provided within 24 hours hence those travelling where hospital access is limited should be advised to get vaccinated prior to travelling
